Is cell phone photography comparable to SLR?

This is a topic that has been repeatedly mentioned and discussed repeatedly.

The current cell phone, whose essence is a small wide-angle fixed-focus camera (about 28mm), even if the dual camera phone, the focal length is also extended to 56mm only. The most important: the size of the image sensor, the hard currency that determines the quality of the image, the cell phone is much smaller than the camera because of the volume limitations, and it is worse than the professional camera. Therefore, in the low-light environment shooting, high-speed continuous shooting, etc., the phone is still a lot weaker.

However, because of its powerful post-processing capabilities, mobile phones also have their own advantages.

Quality

Image quality is a comprehensive indicator. Specific differences can be measured in terms of latitude, high sensitivity, color depth, and color difference.

The main reason for the difference is the image sensor. Take note4 for example, note4 uses the photosensitive element of the Sony IMX240, which is a 1/2.6 inch size, 1600W pixel sensor. Take another example of two Nikon 1600W SLRs. The D7000 is an APSC format. The sensor size is 1.7 inches and the area is 19.53 times note4. The D4 is full-frame, the sensor size is 2.7 inches and the area is 49.28 times note4. That is, although all of them are 1600W pixels, the size of a single pixel of D4 is approximately 50 times that of note4, but actually it is actually larger. Then, the lighting ability of a single pixel is obviously not the same.

As can be seen from this picture, the camera's sensor is generally much larger than the mobile phone.

But compared with SLR (APS-C size), full-frame, medium-format, it is too small:

1.1 latitude

Tolerance is a more professional concept. We only need to know that the more latitude the photos are, the more information is recorded, and the later the room is better. See a contrast.

Figure 1 is iPhone5s. Figure 2 is the Nikon D610. It can be seen that, in the high light part, the 5S is dead, and there is another dead darkness in the dark. No details can be seen. Can see D610, high light part is rarely dead white, the dark can also see the details. Even the best photographers have no way to make up for this gap. And this is still a comparison of the situation where uploading web images is compressed.

1.2 color depth

Color depth can be understood as the richness of color, which is the kind of color that the camera can express. The photograph in Figure 1 shows that the degree of richness of color is not as good as that of Figure 2, but it is a pale feeling. That is why the color depth is not enough.

1.4 Latitude

Mobile phone manufacturers also have their own advantages, that is, software algorithms. In this regard, Google, Apple, Nokia’s original imaging department and Samsung can all say that they are hanging on traditional camera manufacturers.

The biggest advancement in the last year or two is the multi-frame synthesis algorithm. The excellent multi-frame synthesis algorithm combined with powerful DSP can improve the resolution, low-light performance and latitude under limited hardware. In fact, the traditional camera factory is also studying multi-frame synthesis algorithms, but because the level of software development and camera DSP performance is weak, the effect is completely inferior to mobile phones, especially latitude. With the algorithm, dim light shooting can also be improved:

Figure 2 shows that the HDR+ multi-frame synthesis (stack) has been significantly improved compared to Figure 1.

However, HDR cannot be solved when the light is too dark, and the size of the sensor hardware can only be increased or decreased.
